# macro_search_series

Resolve a macro topic to ranked series in our catalog.

| Field | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Category | Macro (`macro`) |
| Exposure | public |
| MCP tool | `macro_search_series` |
| Documentation | https://www.agentdatasets.com/docs/tools/macro_search_series |

## Description

Resolve a macro topic to ranked series in our catalog.

Covers Treasury, BLS, BEA, ECB policy/€STR/euro-area yield curves,
Federal Reserve Board H.15/PRATES rates, H.4.1 balance-sheet levels,
H.8 bank credit and deposits, G.17/G.19 activity and credit, SLOOS
lending standards and loan demand, USAspending obligations, plus
Eurostat HICP, GDP growth, and unemployment.

The result is the shared envelope: `data.query` echoes the search and
`data.matches` is the ranked list (best first); `meta` holds `source`
("macro_catalog") and the freshest match `as_of`; `pagination` is null —
this is a bounded relevance list, not a paged one, so refine the query
for better matches rather than expecting to page.

Each match carries the `series_key` (pass it to `macro_get_series`),
`source` (`treasury`/`bls`/`bea`/`ecb`/`frb`/`usaspending`/`eurostat`),
`title`, `units`,
`currency` (null for dimensionless series like percents/indices), `frequency`
(`daily`…`annual`), `seasonal_adjustment`, `geography`, a `score` in
[0, 1], and a `match_reason` (`series_key`, `title`, or `keyword`) so you
can see why a candidate ranked where it did. Note that each native
frequency is its own series (a quarterly and an annual GDP cut are two
keys) — pick the frequency you want here rather than expecting one series
to downsample. An empty/whitespace query returns no matches (a normal,
empty success — not an error).

## Parameters

Input schema advertised to MCP clients and mirrored by the REST query string.

| Parameter | In | Type | Required | Default | Constraints | Description |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| query | input | `string` | yes | — | — | Free-form topic search over the curated macro catalog: a concept ('10-year treasury yield', 'core CPI', 'federal funds target range'), a series-key fragment ('cpi', 'treasury_yield', 'fed_funds'), or a single word ('unemployment'). Call this FIRST when you have a topic rather than an exact series_key, then pass a match's `series_key` to macro_get_series. |
| limit | input | `integer` | no | 10 | min 1, max 50 | Max ranked matches to return (1–50). |

## Provenance

- `bea` — U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, NIPA table lines: GDP (growth/nominal/chained), personal consumption expenditures, personal income, PCE price indexes (U.S. Government work, public domain (us-gov-public-domain)). See https://www.agentdatasets.com/docs/attribution.md
- `bls` — U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, CPI (headline/core, seasonally adjusted/not adjusted), PPI final demand, unemployment, labor-force participation, nonfarm payrolls, average hourly earnings (U.S. Government work, public domain (us-gov-public-domain)). See https://www.agentdatasets.com/docs/attribution.md
- `ecb` — European Central Bank, Ten curated ECB key-interest-rate, €STR, and euro-area AAA central-government yield-curve spot-rate series (ECB information reuse terms (ecb-reuse)). See https://www.agentdatasets.com/docs/attribution.md
- `eurostat` — Eurostat, Curated euro-area price, activity and labour series (Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)). See https://www.agentdatasets.com/docs/attribution.md
- `frb` — Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, Curated H.15 and PRATES policy/market rates plus FOMC federal-funds target-range levels (U.S. Government work, public domain (us-gov-public-domain)). See https://www.agentdatasets.com/docs/attribution.md
- `macro_catalog` — Curated internal catalog (Treasury, BLS, BEA, FRB, USAspending, Eurostat), Discovery catalog for macro series search (`series_catalog.yaml`) spanning Treasury, BLS, BEA, Federal Reserve Board, USAspending, and Eurostat series metadata; a matched series' own `source` still carries its originating agency (Aggregates U.S. Government public-domain series and Eurostat CC BY 4.0 series (see the source-specific entries); the catalog identifier itself carries no separate license). See https://www.agentdatasets.com/docs/attribution.md
- `treasury` — U.S. Department of the Treasury, Daily par yield curve (11 tenors), Debt to the Penny, and average interest rates on Treasury securities (U.S. Government work, public domain (us-gov-public-domain)). See https://www.agentdatasets.com/docs/attribution.md
- `usaspending` — U.S. Department of the Treasury, USAspending.gov, Agency and government-wide federal contract and assistance obligation totals by fiscal year and fiscal quarter (U.S. Government work, public domain (us-gov-public-domain)). See https://www.agentdatasets.com/docs/attribution.md
